APPENDIX A (FEB 2010)
COMPREHENSIVE PRODUCT AND OPTIONS LIST
MATERIALS AND RESOURCES-RECYCLED CONTENT (MR CREDIT 4)
One point for recycled content of 10% OR two
points for recycled content of 20%.
PRELIMINARY REMARKS:
It
has already been established that MegaMet M-C-CM frames and basic doors exceed
the minimum recycled content of LEED 2009. The following are more detailed
statements for specific designs and construction. The total recycled content of
33% for steel is used throughout this appendix.
HEAVIER
FRAME GAGES:
It
has been established that the total weight of a typical 16 gage frame is 50
pounds. The weight of the actual steel content is 48 pounds (96%), including
anchors, reinforcing, and other components. Based on a weight of 2.5 pounds per
square foot, the weight of steel sheet for jambs and head components is about 42
pounds.
Increasing the gage thickness of the frame increases not only the total weight,
but also the total percentage of steel content. For example, a 14 gage frame
increases the weight of steel sheet for jambs and head components to about 53
pounds, total weight to about 61 pounds, and steel content to 59 pounds (almost
97%). Using the 33%, the recycled content
of the 14 gage frame is about 32%.
Heavier gages increase percentages accordingly.
HEAVIER
DOOR GAGES:
It
has been established that the total weight of a typical 16 gage door is 130
pounds. The weight of the actual steel content is 120 pounds (92%), excluding
primer, filler, core, and adhesive. Based on a weight of 2.5 pounds per square
foot, the weight of steel sheet for door
faces only is about 110 pounds.
Increasing the gage thickness of the door faces increases not only the total
weight, but also the total percentage of steel content. For example, the same
door with 14 gage faces increases the weight of steel sheet for faces to about
138 pounds, total weight to about 158 pounds, and steel content to 148 pounds
(over 93%). Using the 33%, the recycled
content of the 14 gage door is over 31%. Heavier gages increase percentages
accordingly.
LIGHTER
DOOR GAGES:
For
an 18 gage door, the weight of steel sheet for
door faces only is about 88 pounds
(based on a weight of 2.0 pounds per square foot). The total weight decreases to
about 108 pounds, the actual steel content decreases to about 98 pounds (about
91%). Using the 33%, the recycled content
of the 18 gage door is 30%.
RIB (STEEL
STIFFENED) DOORS:
The
addition of vertical steel ribs adds almost 11 pounds per rib based on the
MegaMet standard rib size and gage. For
single rib construction, the total weight of a typical 16 gage door
increases to 141 pounds. The weight of the actual steel content with one
stiffening rib is 131 pounds (93%). Using the 33%, the
recycled content of the single rib door
is about 31%.
Additional ribs, such as for steel stiffened doors like HMMA 861 will increase
percentages accordingly.
250 DEGREE
TEMPERATURE RISE FIRE DOOR
The
total weight of a typical 16 gage temperature rise door is 173 pounds. The
weight of the actual steel content is 120 pounds (69%), excluding primer, filler
and adhesive. The balance is the proprietary core material. Although this core
consists of 30-40% recycled material we have not included it since the
recycled steel content of the door itself
is over 30%.
STAINLESS
STEEL DOORS AND FRAMES:
Although manufactured in a similar melting process as cold rolled steel,
recycled content of stainless steel is different. Information available from the
Specialty Steel Industry of North America (SSINA) and published on www.ssina.com
indicates that the recycled content of 300 series stainless steel used in
construction markets is 75 to 85%, more than double the recycled content of steel.
Whether steel components of MegaMet doors and frames are provided as entirely
stainless steel or stainless steel with steel reinforcements and parts, the
recycled content will exceed the minimum
recycled content of LEED 2009.
LEAD LINED
(X-RAY) DOORS AND FRAMES:
Since the 1970s, the US Government has strictly regulated the production of lead
by any process. As a result, over 95% of lead used in construction or X-ray
protection is made from "post consumer" recycled sources such as motor vehicle
batteries, wheel weights, plumbing demolition, etc.
At
such a high percentage of recycled content, the
addition of lead for X-ray protection
more than doubles the recycled content
percentage of the door or frame.
STYRENE
STIFFENED ACOUSTICAL DOOR:
The
door incorporates a unique acoustic barrier interwoven with expanded polystyrene
stiffeners. The total weight of a 3-0 X 7-0 door is about 154 pounds, consisting
of about 24 pounds of acoustic barrier having a recycled content of 40% and 120
pounds of steel having the recycled content of 33%. The combination results in a
recycled content of over 30% for the door.
ACOUSTICAL
DOOR MODEL 2A:
This door design forms the basis for MegaMet's 1
3/4" door STC ratings up to STC 50. The total weight of a 3-0 X 7-0 door with 2A
construction is a little over 270 pounds, consisting of about 200 pounds of
steel having the recycled content of 33% and about 50 pounds of proprietary
acoustic barrier having a recycled content of 40%. The remainder is adhesive and
insulation.
The
recycled content of the steel plus acoustic barrier totals about 86 pounds
resulting in a recycled content of over 31% for the complete door.
MATERIALS AND RESOURCES-REGIONAL MATERIALS (MR CREDIT 5)
One point for 10% of the material cost
manufactured within 500 miles OR two points for 20% of the material cost
manufactured within 500 miles.
MegaMet's location puts us within a 500 mile radius of portions of over 16
states and numerous major cities. This creates the potential for earning
additional points. A reference map has been provided in our "COMPREHENSIVE LEED
STATEMENT".
MATERIALS AND RESOURCES-MATERIALS REUSE (MR CREDIT 3)
One point for using
salvaged, refurbished or reused materials in
5% of the material cost OR two points for 10% of
the material cost of total value of materials on the project.
These potential points would apply during the renovation of a building that has
(had) MegaMet hollow metal doors and frames. Except for frames embedded in
masonry walls, almost all MegaMet doors and frames are reusable, provided that
they have been properly maintained.
Creatively, the large percentages of recyclable material in MegaMet doors and
frames can be recycled to provide funding for renovations.
INDOOR
ENVIRONMENTAL QUALITY-DURING CONSTRUCTION (IEQ CREDIT 3.1) and INDOOR
ENVIRONMENTAL QUALITY-BEFORE OCCUPANCY (IEQ CREDIT 3.2)
One point each for reduction of indoor air
quality problems during construction and prior to occupancy.
MegaMet has quality control measures in place to assure that primers and
adhesives are dry prior to shipment so that they do not contribute any harmful
gases or odors. In addition, we DO NOT use core materials that are subject to
"outgassing" for extended lengths of time.
NOTE: IEQ Credits 4.1 and 4.2
concerning "Low-Emitting Materials" such as adhesives, paints, coatings, and
sealants apply only to JOBSITE APPLIED materials, not those incorporated during manufacturing of the doors and frames.
LEED 2009 for SCHOOLS
ENHANCED ACOUSTICAL PERFORMANCE (IEQ CREDIT 9)
One point is awarded
for designing the building shell, classrooms & core learning space partitions to
meet the Sound Transmission Class (STC) requirements of ANSI Standard
S12.60-2002.
MegaMet's
STYRENE STIFFENED ACOUSTICAL DOOR was designed and successfully tested to meet the STC ratings of the document referenced. Testing indicated
that this door achieved an operable STC rating of 41 with conventional gaskets.
This STC exceeds ratings required by ANSI Standard S12.60 for all classrooms,
including those adjacent to music rooms or a gymnasium.
